PHI with Ankylosing spondylitis

Read in German: PKV mit Bechterew

How does this condition affect your private health insurance?

Bechterew's disease, officially known as Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease primarily affecting the spine. It causes inflammation of the vertebrae, leading to severe chronic pain and discomfort, particularly in the lower back and hips. Over time, in severe cases, the vertebrae can fuse, resulting in a rigid, immobile spine, often called a 'bamboo spine'. The disease can also affect other joints, eyes (uveitis), and, less commonly, the heart or lungs. It typically begins in early adulthood and progresses gradually, significantly impacting mobility and quality of life if not managed.

Impact on Your Insurance Policy

Duration of Illness (Initial)

Several weeks to months (gradual onset of symptoms)

Duration of Illness (Lifetime)

Chronic, lifelong disease

Cost of Treatment (Initial)

High (diagnosis, initial medication, physical therapy: hundreds to thousands of dollars)

Cost of Treatment (Lifetime)

Very high (ongoing medication, including biologics, physical therapy, regular medical evaluations: tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more, depending on severity and medication)

Very low directly attributed to the disease itself, but slightly increased risk from complications (e.g., cardiovascular issues)

Risk of Secondary Damages

High (spinal fusion, severe kyphosis, uveitis, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular complications, peripheral arthritis, reduced mobility, chronic pain)

Probability of Full Recovery

Extremely low/virtually none (it is a chronic, progressive condition; remission is the goal of treatment, not cure)

Underlying Disease Risk

Moderate (associated with other autoimmune conditions like Psoriasis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis), and a genetic predisposition with HLA-B27 positivity)
